Westland High School has a Student Behaviour Management System in place to maintain a positive learning environment that supports students’ learning and preserves the well-being and mana of all involved. This is in line with the Ministry of Education’s Positive Behaviour for Learning initiative.

The behaviour matrix revolves around two key tikanga Maori principles: whanaungatanga (connection) and manaakitanga (hospitality) and has four main guiding principles that students are expected to adhere to:

• Working together to succeed
• Active participation
• Being kind and respectful
• Being ready to learn

Should inappropriate behaviour occur, staff will work with students and parents to achieve a positive outcome.

Strategies for behaviour management include:

• Time-outs
• Restorative korero
• Student self-reflection
• Student conference
• Family/caregiver meetings
• Peer mediation
• Referral to school Guidance Counsellor

In the event of frequent and severe breaches of the expected student behaviour standards, students may be stood down or suspended or referred to the Resource Teacher: Learning and Behaviour (RTLB) service.
