Ms Jane Brownie (International Director) shines on the National stage.

Recently our International Director was awarded an Impact award at the National SIEBA (Schools International Education Business Association) conference.

For those who have been lucky enough to have contact with Jane Brownie you will know how committed and dedicated she is to building a strong international student programme for all the students of Westland High School to benefit from. The international programme not only offers the chance to showcase the fantastic piece of paradise we call home to the world. But it also offers our students the opportunity to learn about other cultures and countries.

In the world of International programmes the SIEBA conference is the once a year opportunity for International directors from schools across the country to network and gain ideas from each other, promote our schools to agents and to advocate for the benefits the international student market bring to New Zealand. During this conference is the awards dinner where our very own Jane Brownie from Westland High School won an Impact award for her work with our International programme. She won this over an above other International Directors, many who are from much larger school’s with far more resources at their disposal. This is a testament to the quality programme that Jane has built here at Westland High School and we are very grateful to have her.

Below is the introduction that was read at the conference to announce Jane’s award.

Westland High School

Jane has made an outstanding contribution to international education through her vision, commitment, and ability to create meaningful, student-centred experiences. Over the past three years, she has transformed the international programme at our school, growing Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) student numbers from just 2 in 2023 to 10 in 2026, an increase of 400%. This is particularly significant in our rural West Coast context, where attracting international students can be challenging. Jane has achieved this through her work across marketing, agent relationships, social media, international travel, administration, pastoral care, and homestay coordination. Her ability to manage all of these areas demonstrates exceptional organisation and a deep commitment to student wellbeing.

Jane’s leadership is defined by innovation and a strong alignment with our school values of Manaakitanga and Kaitiakitanga. Faced with budget constraints, she designed a highly creative Term 4 programme that ensured international students received a rich and authentic New Zealand experience. By partnering with Development West Coast, she facilitated a unique environmental education opportunity, including a three-day trip to the Buller region focused on sustainable tourism practices. This programme immersed students in the natural beauty and cultural significance of Te Tai Poutini while providing valuable, real-world learning.

In addition, Jane developed a wide range of activities that connected students to the local community and environment. These included tree planting, hiking, cycling the West Coast Wilderness Trail, volunteering with Riding for the Disabled, beach clean-ups, visits to Shantytown Heritage Park, farm experiences, conservation trips, and mentoring opportunities within Outdoor Education. These experiences reflect her commitment to authentic, place-based learning beyond the classroom.

Jane’s impact extends across the wider school community. The growth of the international programme has enhanced cultural awareness among domestic students, fostering a more inclusive and globally minded environment. Many students now volunteer as buddies, recognising the value of building relationships with peers from different backgrounds.

Jane is a passionate advocate for international education and a highly valued member of our school and community. She consistently goes above and beyond to ensure every student feels supported, connected, and enriched. Her leadership, innovation, and impact make her a truly deserving recipient of this award.
