Year 13 PE Field Trip
18 Mar
High Ropes and Caving!
This term the Year 13 PE class are working on standard 90504 – Analyse issues in safety management for outdoor activity to devise safety management strategies. The practical side of this assessment is to plan and experience a trip where the students engage is activities that carry an element of risk.
On the 12th and 13th March, 18 students (9 from Hokitika, 3 from Japan, 4 from Italy and two from Germany) embarked on an exciting adventure, led by their Year 13 PE teacher, Mr Sheldon Lee and supported by International Director, Jane Brownie.
On the first day, the students spent the afternoon challenging themselves on the high ropes course at Adrenaline Forest at Spencer Park. Some of the students pushed themselves to a point where they were fearful but were very much supported and encouraged by their peers. The activity is “challenge by choice” so each student was in charge of their own experience with the back up of trained staff at Adrenaline Forest. There were many moments of growth.
Day two saw the students embark on a one hour adventure in Cave Stream. All the students had been well prepared during the weeks leading up to the trip and entered the cave fully kitted out in thermals, sturdy shoes, beanies and head torches. The students walked carefully over slippery rocks, up small but strong waterfalls and entered chest deep cold water.
They all saw first-hand the importance of preparation for this trip and communication with each other. The students loved the challenge and it was especially unique for our international students from Tokyo who had never experienced anything of this kind before!
Our students are so fortunate to have these opportunities at Westland High School.
