One week in Outdoor Education

17 Sep

Seven days in Outdoor Education saw the Middle School class head to Cedar Flats and the Senior students go to Carroll Hutt.

Scenes like these are very common at WHS, these pics are all within one week. Our focus this term has been Rangatiratanga with decision making and leadership based on the group achieving a common goal.

It doesn’t amaze me that students ranging from complete beginners in the outdoors, exchange students and students who have developed very strong skill sets from families and perhaps our Outdoor Education program, come together in our beautiful back yard and experience deep learning.

For teenagers to get a teacher out of bed at 6 (they wanted 4am), jump into a river full of snow melt, carry two full packs without being asked is clear feedback to me that Outdoor Education is working. It’s engaging and yes the learning far surpasses what is quantifiable on paper in this learning area. All WHS students can achieve success together in the outdoors and very regularly do.
