Welcome from the director

Welcome from the Director & Overview of International Programme

Westland High School is a signatory to the Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice 2016

We welcome students from a variety of countries – from Japan to Germany. We have short-stay group visits (10-20 days) and long-stay individual programmes ranging from 3 months to 2 years.

International students can enjoy a unique kiwi experience including experiencing a homestay with a New Zealand family. Our school curriculum for international students offers a large range of academic courses plus outdoor education experiences in the New Zealand environment such as snow caving, abseiling, rock climbing and kayaking in breathtaking locations.

New Zealand’s University Entrance exam and NCEA 3 qualifications are perfect for students from Germany as the appropriate choice of subjects at this level entitle German students to enter university in Germany.

Hokitika is famous for its “West Coast hospitality” and friendly, and relaxed lifestyle. Westland High School has a welcoming, inclusive environment. International students have the opportunity to forge lifelong friendships and get involved in a range of community activities. You could even learn some te reo Māori while you are here!

There are a range of support networks that exist at Westland High School for international students to ensure that their time with us is rewarding and positive. Our small international programme offers the benefit of enabling international students to integrate fully into the wider student body and have an authentic New Zealand experience.

We also strongly encourage our New Zealand students to consider the benefits of an international high school experience by doing a semester abroad or overseas exchange programmes.
