If students want to stay at school but are keen to start training for work, Westland High School, offers students the option of attending the West Coast Trades Academy from Year 11 onwards. It gives students a chance to get an introduction to a Polytechnic learning environment and get a head-start on pursuing a trades-based career. Students spend one day a week off-site learning in a different environment that is experiential learning based.
Westland High School’s Trades Academy option is delivered through the West Coast Trades Academy and its partners Tai Poutini Polytechnic and Whenua Iti Outdoors. The programme is very popular among Westland High School students and demand for spaces is high.
Vocational Pathway Awards
All but one of the programmes offered by the West Coast Trades Academy provide students with the ability to achieve a vocational pathways award. This can be a real advantage when looking for work and training opportunities in the sector.
To attain a vocational pathways award students must:
+ Achieve NCEA level 2
