Award-winning sports groups

Some of Westland High School’s sports teams have been recognised for their contribution to the wider community and sporting excellence.

In 2016, the Westland High School First XV Rugby Team was the Regional Winner of the Sports and Leisure category at the Trustpower Community Awards.

In addition, Westland High School’s Girls and Boys Badminton teams have won the West Coast Badminton Championships every year they have been held since XXXX.

Rugby has a particularly strong presence at Westland High School. We have Junior Touch Rugby teams, Boys and Girls Years 7 & 8 teams, an Under 15 team, Second XV and First XV.

Westland High School has some of the most qualified rugby coaching staff on the West Coast, and they are committed to providing opportunities to students. Each year, WHS students who play rugby have access to several rugby training skills camps e.g. at Burnham. We also have close ties to rugby scouts for the Canterbury Crusaders and Māori All Blacks.

Westland High School Alumnus, Josh Tomlinson, who plays for Wests Rugby Club in Hokitika was recently selected for the Under 19 All Blacks squad.

The Westland High School gymnasium can also be used by students in intervals and lunch breaks.

The School also has links to the local Hockey Club, Golf Club, Swim Club, Tennis Club and Equestrian group for students interested in pursuing those sports.
