Overseas exchanges and trips
Education Outside the Classroom: Overseas Exchanges and Trips
Westland High School embraces an Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) perspective.
As part of this, students have the opportunity to partake in a number of real-world experiences to enhance learning, both those run by Westland High School and external organisations. These include but are not limited to: overseas exchanges, school trips, Spirit of Adventure and Outward Bound experiences.
Westland High School has worked with STS, a reputable worldwide student exchange programme with 50 years experience. STS provides opportunities for our students to go on high school exchanges. The next departures will be January and August 2019. Students can choose from 2-3 month, one semester or year-long exchanges to 16 countries worldwide.
Students have the opportunity to learn a new language and a new culture and make memories and friends that last a lifetime.

Fiji Sport and Cultural Trip 2018
During the April school holidays, a group of Westland High School students including a netball team, rugby sevens team and Kapa Haka group travelled over to Fiji for our sporting and cultural experience lasting 12 days and 11 nights. As part of the trip, the students also visited an orphanage in Fiji.
Vietnam Trip 2015
One of Westland High School’s most memorable overseas learning experiences was the 2015 History, Geography and Tourism classes’ field trip to Vietnam. Fourteen students from Years 12 and 13 and three teachers travelled to North and South Vietnam and visited Ha Long Bay, Hanoi, Hoi An, The Citadel Way, the War Remembrance Museum in Saigon and the Cu Chi Tunnels.
Trip leader, Ross Wickett, said, “The students found it a life-changing experience being able to see how other people live, how historical events impact a country and coming face to face with poverty. They were able to see what they had learnt in the classroom with their own eyes and came away with an understanding that history contains multiple perspectives and narratives.”
Students also had the opportunity to partake in some cultural experiences such as watching a water puppet demonstration and taking a traditional half-day Vietnamese cooking class.
There are many other external opportunities available to interested students.
The Spirit of Adventure Trust offers 10 day sailing voyages that are designed to help youth overcome their mental obstacles through working as a team and learning new skills.
Outward Bound is an organisation that helps youth find their true potential and confidence through outdoor challenge and adventure. Youth go on group expeditions in nature including tramping and kayaking and build transferable life skills and attitudes that are applicable to any life situation.
