Message from Board of Trustees Chairperson – Latham Martin

E ngā mana, e ngā reo, e ngā karangatanga maha, tēnā koutou katoa. Warm greetings to you all.
Thank you for choosing Westland High School for your ākonga.

We, as a Board, are very proud of our school with its focus on improving student achievement outcomes, which in plain language means on our children’s learning and development; whilst at the same time creating a nurturing and encouraging environment where all learners can express themselves and learn to the best of their abilities.

The Board of Trustees brings together five parent representatives, two Rūnanga Trustees, the Principal, a Student Trustee and a Staff Trustee to provide strategic direction and oversight for the school.

During 2017 consultation was held to redevelop our Charter and Strategic Plan. Held within our charter is our school’s new vision/motto “Experience Success Together / Piki kotahi ki te taumata”. We chose to use“piki” for experiencing success because it refers to climbing the mountains of “Kā Tiritiri o te Moana” – taumata refers to the top or summit. Kotahi refers to everyone experiencing success in unison (as one). The metaphor here is climbing to the summit of the Southern Alps. Also our charter identifies three new Values to take Westland High School forward. As a board we believe this holds our students success at its centre; reflects our values; is holistic and reflects Western and Māori worldview.

So, on behalf of the Board, I would like to welcome you and your ākonga to our school. I am sure they will be exposed to learning that will set them up for life.
