Level 1 Mathematics A

Pre-requisites:

Satisfactory completion of MATAA and MATAS. MATTR is also highly desirable preparation for this course.

Course description:

This course is aimed at developing critical mathematical thinking skills and leads directly to the corresponding course at level two and the calculus and statistics courses at level three. The emphasis in this course will be on the development of strong algebraic thinking and skills.

Topics covered:

– Solving equations and manipulating algebraic expressions

– Using algebraic techniques to solve problems

– Comparing sets of data using statistical techniques

– A study of probability

– Using geometry skills including trigonometry to solve problems.

Cost: Purchase of workbooks ($30) is advised. A scientific calculator ($20) is essential. A graphics calculator ($90) would be useful – particularly if you are planning on going on to study 12 MATA where one is essential.
