CAREERS CORNER

Former WHS students contributing to the Hokitika community:

Katrina Thornley

Industry:

Photography

Business:

Kodak Express

Attended Westland

High School: 1987

Vocational Pathway:
Katrina was interested in nursing, but was too young to be accepted onto the programme. She thought a 12 month post would give her the time to meet the requirements. She started as a Pharmacy Technician at John Grey Pharmacy in Hokitika (now Westland Pharmacy) and studied by distance.  She stayed on in Hokitika after meeting and marrying Steve Thornley.

John Grey opened a new shop and expanded into providing a photo printing services and Katrina moved to the Photo Lab. She discovered that this was something she really enjoyed. Katrina and Steve bought the business in 2010 and Katrina has built it up to include extra services. Katrina now is a photographer – including weddings and school photography (from 2013), an agency for Kiwibank and NZ Post from 2016, and is now expanding the gift range.

Her message for students:

  1. Be prepared to work hard
  2. Don’t be complacent – always look for new ways of expanding your business.
