At Westland High School we see physical education as a meaningful and valid subject that builds on student knowledge in, through and about health and physical activity. Students will develop knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes in the areas of personal health and physical development; movement concepts and physical activity; relationships with others; and healthy communities and environments. We want to create opportunities for students to analyse their role in physical activity and look at their own hauora so that they can make positive decisions about being lifelong participants in physical activity.
Physical education and health are compulsory for all students in the junior school, and an option from year eleven. Westland High School has a compulsory physical education uniform.
Where does Physical Education, Health and Outdoor Education lead?
Students can follow a variety of career pathways if choosing subjects in this area. There are many courses at all levels for students at educational institutions both locally and nationally where the student can follow their specific needs and goals in this area of sport and recreation and education. Students then have the chance to follow a career pathway that might lead them into sports science, physiotherapy, sports coaching, teaching or other fields.
