Proposed changes to lunchtime arrangements

Year 7 and 8 students to remain on school grounds at all times, including when alighting from the buses. Parent’s permission required to leave school at lunchtime. We have a duty of care for our youngest and most at-risk students. This part remains unchanged.

Year 9 and 10 students permitted to leave the grounds before school and at lunchtime to go to the local Stafford Street Store only. This would include students arriving on the buses. This freedom reflects a growing independence and freedom, but within some defined limits. Students may go home for lunch as with current arrangements. Currently year 9 and 10 students are to remain on the grounds at all times unless they go home for lunch.

Year 11-13 students permitted to leave the grounds as for years 9 and 10, but also have the option of going to Fitzherbert Street Store or to Porkies. Excursions into town should be open for year 13’s as a right, and to years 11 and 12 with good reason only. This also represents current practice.

If you have opinions on this proposal, please contact me at the school, preferably by e-mail at the address below. If you would like the opportunity to discuss the proposal, it will be tabled at the next PTA meeting at 7.30pm on Tuesday 22 May and you are all welcome to attend.

Representing the school on trips away

Westland High School has a long standing commitment to reducing the isolation that we experience by supporting sporting, cultural and other groups to attend events and functions in other parts of New Zealand. We support a diverse range of sports teams and have a great and active interest in the arts that punches above our weight in comparison with other schools of our size.

In a few cases we struggle to get a full team and on occasions we fail to do so and events, or our participation in them, are cancelled. Most of the time we are able to send groups and they are almost always great ambassadors for our school. On the rare occasion when this is not the case, we have usually seen evidence of a similar nature at school. For this reason we are going to consider not allowing a few students to be members of teams or visiting groups if their behaviour in and about the school is not respectful and proper. It is not the intention of this process to punish those who are not performing academically from participation in sport, but those who mistreat staff and do not contribute positively to the school. The numbers are very small, but the effect may be to encourage staff and outside-school supporters to provide more opportunities to travel, in the knowledge that the school will undertake some measures to protect the wellbeing of those on the trip through a process of selection. For most students, this process will be invisible and automatic. For a few it will create the need for some positive actions.

I hope you are happy to work with us in support of the vast number of tremendous students that we have in our school who deserve the right to be held in high regard in our and other communities.

New uniform now at Postie

School jumpers, fleece tops, and waterproof jackets with our school logo are now available at Postie. Our school community has consistently asked for greater branding of our school uniform and the realisation of that process is now here. These items will now form the basis of our school uniform, but we will continue to allow the use of items with no logo in the interests of economy. Please support us with our new image as soon as you are able to do so.

School finishing early Tuesday 27th March

Normal timetabled classes will finish at 1.20pm on Tuesday 27th March to allow all students and their families to meet with their whanau teachers. This will be a good opportunity to get an overview of your child’s progress and ask any questions you might have. Your child’s whanau teacher will contact you shortly to make an appointment (if they have not already).

Bus students are free to leave the school grounds if they sign out at the office.

Middle school programme information evening

On Monday 21st November, at 7pm in the school library, there will be an information evening about Westland High School's Middle School Programme.

We invite parents of students currently in the middle school, parents of year eight students, and parents of new entrants into the middle school for next year to come along and learn more about the courses that were offered this year, and developments for next year.

We hope to see you there.
