When planning your course for the year, you, your parents and your whānau teacher need to think about how you have done last year and what is a reasonable course for you to take. You need to have balance, with a wide range of courses, challenge (a few things that might be more difficult), some exercise and lots of fun. These courses are designed to help you to develop the skills you need to learn as you get older, while keeping your motivation and interest up as well. Your whānau teacher has more time this year to help you to work on goals for succeeding in your courses and your parents will also get more information on your progress.

But quite a lot is now up to you. You need to make sure you are developing the skills you need, and in particular developing what we call "key competencies" in the curriculum. This means you need to work by yourself and with other people, get along with other people so you don't interfere with their learning and they don't interfere with yours, get your head around the new challenges you face and learn new words and ideas and take a real part in making sure that you learn a lot this year and get the habits you need for the future. Yes, you have to do homework, and yes, you have to learn some things before you get to the real challenges.

What you choose now will set the framework for the year, but you also need to know that if you fail your assessments, you may not be able to take some of the courses offered later in the year, so there may be some change to what you have chosen now. If you are still failing things at the end of trimester two, you will be taking a course called "Academic Catch-up" in trimester three. If you don't make a success of that, you will not be able to move into the senior school in some or all subjects, and year nine students in that course may not be able to take some of the advanced courses for 2013.

Year ten students need to make sure they choose courses that will prepare them well for NCEA next year. Look out for words like "pre-requisite", which means you have to take this course to get into the level one courses. In some courses there are NCEA units suggested, and these courses will extend students who are ready and able to do them.

You must choose ONE subject from EACH column made up of the following subjects:

  • English: (yellow) You must take an English course in each trimester.
  • Maths: (pink) You must take three trimesters of maths over two years as a minimum. If you are in year ten and did reasonably well in year nine, you should be looking at the advanced maths courses.
  • Science: (blue) You must take three science courses over two years as a minimum. Over the two year period you need to have achieved the standard in assessments in at least four trimesters to be eligible for the advanced science class in year 11. Year ten students are required to achieve the standard in at least two trimesters in 2011.
  • Social Studies: (purple) You must take three social studies courses over two years as a minimum.
  • PE/health/Outdoor ed: (green) You must take two of these as a minimum. You may only take outdoor ed once, and preference will be given to year ten students if numbers are too large.
  • Arts: (orange) You must take one courses during the year as a minimum. Note some pre-requisite courses if you are in year ten.
  • Technology: (grey) You must take one technology courses during the year as a minimum.
  • Languages and general: (white) You should take one language or general course, unless there are special circumstances.
